digiGO helps clients with new Model Information Protocol

digiGO, the platform for digital collaboration in the design, construction and engineering sectors, launched version 1.0 of the Model Information Protocol on April 19. This allows clients and contractors in the construction industry to easily establish project-specific contractual agreements on digital information exchange.

Why an Information Protocol?

For successful BIM project, good agreements between client and contractor are a

condition. The col Information Protocol plays an important role here - in addition to the BIM Implementation Plan (BUP). The Information Protocol lays down specific contractual agreements on digital information exchange in construction projects. As such, it supplements the usual contractual terms and conditions such as DNR, UAV, and UAV-GC. The Information Protocol is an appendix to the contract between Client and Contractor for a project in which digital collaboration is taking place. With tools like this, digiGO contributes to accelerating digital collaboration in the Design, Construction and Engineering sector.

Model Information Protocol

The Model Information Protocol is in line with the international standard series NEN-EN-ISO 19650 (the global standard for the management of digital information in the life cycle of construction works) and replaces the older Model BIM Protocol. It is in line with today's practice of information management in construction projects, which is about more than just 3D models.

To support its use, a clickable online infographic has been developed, explaining step-by-step the application of the Model. The Model and infographic are available for free on the digiGO website. "For example, tile 2 explains how the Model Information Protocol relates to an Information Delivery Specification (ILS) and the BIM Execution Plan (BUP). Because these terms sometimes cause some confusion," explains Dik Spekkink (Spekkink C&R).

No longer needed in 5 years

The Model Information Protocol was developed on behalf of digiGO by Dik, who was also the drafter of the earlier Model BIM Protocol. The new Model was reviewed by several experts in the market before publica?e. "This version is a lot more compact than version 0.9 from 2017, because a number of issues are now regulated through other contract terms such as DNR and UAV." A movement that is continuing, and according to Dik will start to ensure that in five years we will no longer need an Information Protocol, because it will then be an integral part of the general terms and conditions.

New legal aspects included

The biggest differences from the previous version can be found in section 5.5 on ownership and use of data models. "For this, there has been extensive coordination with Prof. mr. Evelien Bruggeman, author of the Handbook Legal Aspects of Working with BIM. For example, it was established that a 3D information protocol should be precisely not a unique creation, but as standard as possible. So that cooperation and exchange with project partners is as smooth as possible." Users of the current version 1.0 are expressly invited to provide feedback, in order to further optimize the model.

Presentation of the new Model

During the Online Friday on April 19, preparer Dik Spekkink presented the new Model Information Protocol. Around 100 interested professionals participated in this meeting, showing great interest. A recording of this livestream can be viewed on the digiGO website.
