Pioneer in concrete pumping celebrates 20th anniversary

RvR Betonpomp Verhuur has been in business for twenty years! The adventure began twenty years ago with a small concrete pump and a healthy dose of courage. Where others were limited by hard-to-reach locations, this family business saw opportunities. Today, it has a modern fleet of concrete pumps and mixers in various sizes, foam concrete solutions, and even the first battery-powered concrete pumps in the Netherlands.

The strength of RvR Betonpomp Verhuur lies in innovation and a keen eye for improvement. Founder and hands-on professional René van Rijs saw that there was nothing in the construction industry between a wheelbarrow and a large concrete pump. ‘Filling the joints between hollow core slabs was done manually using a bucket attached to a crane, which was a time-consuming and heavy task.“ He decided to experiment with a small pump and a 50 mm hose, which could be used to fill hollow core slabs quickly and efficiently. It proved to be a hit: simpler, faster, and cheaper. And so, the first small concrete pump in the Netherlands was born.

Small battery-powered concrete mixer

In the years that followed, the machine park steadily expanded and a partner joined the company in the person of Hans de Bruin. RvR Betonpomp Verhuur brought about a minor revolution in the sector. “The latest step is to work completely emission-free,” says Van Rijs enthusiastically. Three battery-powered concrete pumps are now in operation, and in October 2025, the latest innovation will be unveiled: the very first small battery-powered concrete mixer in the Netherlands. “Compact enough to be attached to a car and ideal for inner-city projects or locations where work equipment heavier than 3,500 kg cannot be used.”

Total peace of mind

In addition to innovation, versatility is a cornerstone of RvR Betonpomp Verhuur. The company offers clients the option of outsourcing the entire process: supplying concrete, pumping, pouring, and finishing with complete pouring and finishing teams. Foam concrete has also become a regular feature of the company's work. This lightweight material is used to insulate and raise floors, making it a popular solution for renovation and sustainability projects. This expertise led to the development of RvR Totaalvloer: a complete flooring concept that combines foam concrete with underfloor heating and a top layer. “The advantage of RvR Totaalvloer is that we take care of the entire process,” explains Van Rijs. “From on-site advice to rapid implementation, often within the same week. With a single point of contact and a complete service package, we take all the work off the customer's hands.”

RvR Betonpomp Verhuur also feels at home in high-rise buildings, such as here on the 22nd floor of the Coolsingel in Rotterdam.

Highlights

There are plenty of highlights. Van Rijs lists a few: “The emission-free dumping at the Binnenhof, the impressive work on the Botlek Bridge, and the renovation of the historic quay walls in Amsterdam and Utrecht.” The company also feels at home in high-rise construction: for example, concrete was poured on several floors of a multi-tenant office tower on Coolsingel in Rotterdam, even up to the 22nd floor. “No location is too crazy for us,” says Van Rijs. “From narrow alleys and inner-city construction to projects on and over the water: we always come up with a solution.”

Bridging large distances

This creative approach results in unique machines. “For example, in collaboration with Putzmeister (manufacturer of concrete pumps, ed.), we have ensured that we can vary the pressure of our 36-meter boom pump electrically between 85 and 130 bar. This is useful for high-rise buildings where you need more pressure or for paths in greenhouses where long distances have to be covered,” says Van Rijs. The company also has a mobile concrete mast on caterpillar tracks. “A find from Italy, where the machine was originally used in tunnel projects. We have equipped the chassis with a diesel engine, so that we can carry out large projects much more efficiently.”

Family business

What makes RvR Betonpomp Verhuur truly special, according to Van Rijs, is that despite its growth (to 70 employees, ed.), it has remained a true family business. “Our entire family is now active in the company. The lines of communication are short and there is a strong bond between us. The atmosphere is no-nonsense: just do it, tackle it together, and always look for a solution.” This approach results in between sixty and seventy jobs per day, ranging from large national contractors to small local assignments.

Van Rijs“ ambition for the future is clear. ”Become even more specialized and remain at the forefront of innovation and safety. While our competitors copy our concept, we continue to innovate." And that is precisely why major players in the construction sector continue to find their way to this innovative family business.
