In 2021, the first 3D concrete printed home of project 'Milestone' rolled out of the 3D printer and the first tenants received the key to this unique home in Eindhoven's Bosrijk neighborhood. A world first that made the international press; never before had a printed home actually been occupied. Now, three years later, the project gets a sequel with the four further developed homes, this time consisting of several floors. Sales of the homes will begin after the summer vacations.
After the realization of the first 3D printed house, work continued in the background to further develop the printing technique. Saint-Gobain Weber Beamix, with a site at the De Hurk industrial park in Eindhoven, has invested heavily in the development of the overall process in recent years in order to arrive at a unique industrial and scalable 3D concrete printing process.
Partly in cooperation with Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), this process has been worked out and optimized in detail in recent years. As a result, an industrial process has been developed that can deliver large-scale, continuous, guaranteed quality. In addition, less material is needed compared to existing construction methods, thus reducing CO2 is saved.
Following that, two new house types were developed that, unlike the first house, consist of multiple floors. The new homes derive their structural properties entirely from the printed concrete, a globally unique feature within 3D printed housing construction. With their organic design - a habitable "boulder" - the new homes fit ideally into their wooded surroundings. Two of each type of home will be placed at the Bosuil in Eindhoven.
Unlike the first property within Milestone, the new homes will be offered for sale. Interested parties can visit www.3dprintedhouse.nl. There, all information about the 3D printed homes can be found and interested parties can register. The start of sales is scheduled after the summer vacation.
After completion of the sales process, realization of the homes will begin in early 2025. Preparations for this are already underway. It is planned that the new residents will be able to move into the homes in the summer of 2025.
Typical of the Milestone project is the cooperation between government, knowledge institutions and industry. The Municipality of Eindhoven is co-initiator, booster of innovation and facilitator of the project, the TU/e conducted research and developed models to enable 3D concrete printing, Saint-Gobain Weber Beamix developed the process needed to deliver consistent quality on the production line, Houben / Van Mierlo Architects designed the homes, Witteveen+Bos is working on the building engineering and structural aspects, and construction company Van Wijnen is leading the project and building the homes.
