2,500 more tons of recycled materials annually due to construction and demolition plant upgrade
Waste-to-product company Renewi is investing in an upgrade of its existing sorting line for construction and demolition waste in Nieuwegein. New techniques, including a drum screen and an eddy current separator, will allow the plant to recycle approximately 2,500 more tons of materials annually. This investment underscores how Renewi is concretely helping to shape and accelerate the circular economy in the Netherlands.
The Dutch government wants to be fully circular by 2050. By 2030, the use of primary raw materials must already be reduced by 50 percent. Since the construction sector is responsible for as much as half of the national raw material consumption, investing in innovative solutions and smarter recycling processes is therefore indispensable to meet these circular goals.
The installation, consisting of a drum sieve, a magnet and an eddy current separator (which removes non-ferrous metals from the waste), makes it possible to recover even more valuable materials, such as screening sand, rubble and metals. This significantly reduces residual streams and increases the recycling rate at the Nieuwegein site.
"Every improvement in our recycling rate counts: for Renewi, for our customers and for society as a whole. This investment in Nieuwegein, a strategically important location for Renewi in the Netherlands, shows concretely how we are trying to accelerate the transition to a circular economy", says Dieter Avonds, Director of Processing at Renewi.
