Because ACT cement uses local raw materials, the U.S. dependence on cement imports is reduced and its competitiveness is strengthened. According to Donal O'Riain, founder and managing director of Ecocem, the certification marks an important step. "The U.S. cement market is one of the largest in the world. This certification provides this market with a route to fast-track sustainability without high cost or complexity."
The certification of Ecocem's ACT technology enables the rapid integration of this low-carbon cement into the US market. It follows Ecocem's previously announced plans in the US: to build a terminal and grinding plant at the Port of Los Angeles. That plan is in the preliminary phase.
ACT (Advanced Cement Technology) is a scalable cement technology that reduces CO₂ emissions in cement production while delivering the required strength, durability and workability for any type of concrete. ACT reduces CO₂ emissions in cement to 70% by replacing clinker with locally available and widely stocked materials such as limestone or other aggregates (SCMs). As a result, the technology provides a viable, scalable and affordable cement of high quality and low CO₂ emissions.
