It is no longer news: the CO2-emissions in the Netherlands must be reduced. The aim from the Concrete Agreement is that CO2-neutral, full reuse of residual concrete streams and concrete elements, smart, adaptive and circular design and construction will become the standard in 2030. Where previously the choice was to demolish an office building, now the focus is on how the building can be preserved and made functional for today's needs. That is the future. But what steps are you taking as an architect, structural engineer, contractor, concrete technologist? How can we ensure that buildings can stand longer? Every case is different and everyone has a different perspective on this.
The first Concrete Café will focus on reuse, maintenance and repair. If the future is reuse, how does the future professional generation look at this? Lucca Fischer will give an inspiring explanation of her graduate work. In July 2022, she graduated cum laude with a Masters in Architecture. Her thesis, "Architectural Young Classics: A sustainable reuse strategy for administrative office buildings of the 1970s and 1980s," addresses sustainable reuse possibilities of office buildings from the 1970s and 1980s. An important aspect in this is the value of the concrete structures in these buildings.
Rob Doomen then takes over from Lucca and explains a case he has been working on . This case is the basis for the panel discussion that follows in the second part of the afternoon. Led by Edwin de Kuiper (CEO Dura Vermeer), Bart van Kampen (Architect De Zwarte Hond), Jelle Lecluijze (Specialist management and maintenance concrete structures Concrete Maintenance Pavilion) and Rob Doomen (Partner and advisor structures Pieters Bouwtechniek) enter into a discussion. What do the various specialties run into when reusing existing building objects? What challenges and solutions do they see? But even more important: the audience will participate in this panel discussion. What do you run into in your daily work? What questions do you have? During an interactive afternoon you will gain and bring a lot of knowledge!
About Concrete Cafe
Small scale, across the country, working together for the future
Concrete Café is an initiative of Concrete Association and is organized four times a year. Meeting colleagues within the concrete (construction) industry and exchanging knowledge on current topics that concern you? That's what the Concrete Café is all about! This new event takes place four times a year and is the place for professionals who want to get everything out of concrete; now and after 2030. Because it is well known that we have a common passion for concrete and a challenge for 2030. The trick is to think big and start small. Everything starts with that first step. Which step that is for you and us to make the concrete chain sustainable, we will discover together and will also get attention in the Cafés!
In 2019, 2020 and 2022, the theme 'Panorama Concrete' was the focus of the Concrete Event. With this choice, Concrete Association is responding to the government theme 'Panorama Netherlands'. In it, the College of Governmental Advisors (CRa) encourages looking at the layout of our country for the next thirty years up to 2050 with an overarching view. During the Concrete Café, concrete attention will be paid to and zoomed in on the challenges for 2030. During each Concrete Café, one of the following topics will take center stage under the main theme of CO2 reduction:
