Car-free, green neighborhood Bajeskwartier gets underground parking garage

This is a new step in the realization of this multifunctional area and at the same time marks the next phase in the development of this new Amsterdam urban district on the site of the former Bijlmerbajes. There will be a total of approximately 1,350 rental and owner-occupied homes for a broad public. In addition, Bajeskwartier will provide space for a high school, workplaces, a hotel, culture and design and a unique landmark, "the Green Tower."

Underground parking means more green space and plenty of room for walkers and cyclists

Bay Area has high ambitions for sustainability, green space and health. One of the goals is for residents to live longer and healthier lives. To achieve this, the district will be made car-free and in many places almost completely car-free, there will be a lot of greenery, and the design of the district and the buildings will invite a healthy lifestyle. Parking will be solved underground, leaving ample space above ground for almost 70 contiguous, mainly public gardens, courtyards and water features. Walkers and cyclists are thus given free rein.

Mobility Hub

The two-story, underground parking garage will have about 410 parking spaces. In addition to public parking spaces and spaces for residents, there will also be a mobility hub with loaner vehicles including electric cars. Thus, residents of Bajeskwartier, especially because of the Spaklerweg subway station located next to the neighborhood, will always have a suitable means of transportation at their disposal, without the burden of owning one.

Harko Kloeze, project director on behalf of Bajes Kwartier Ontwikkeling C.V.: "We are happy that we will now really speed up the realization of Bajeskwartier. The construction of the school Spinoza20First has been in full swing since the beginning of this year and the parking garage is now being added. On top of this, several modern, architectural residential buildings will soon rise. The public area has also been completely designed by landscape architects with the premise that you step straight into greenery from every building. The buildings will house a total of about 1,350 rental and owner-occupied homes of all types and sizes: social rental, private sector rental and owner-occupied. There will also be inspiring workplaces, hospitality, design and social facilities. Starters, families and singles will all find their home here. Bajeskwartier will be a green and sustainable neighborhood for everyone."

Construction of the parking garage is in the hands of BAM Wonen and is expected to last until the end of 2022. The first residential tower is also scheduled to begin construction at the end of 2021.

Energy neutral and circular

Bajeskwartier will be the first area in Amsterdam where GFT waste is collected from the neighborhood and converted into electricity on site for the benefit of the completely energy neutral neighborhood. In addition, a percentage of almost 100% circularity will be achieved by reusing material from the former Bijlmer Bajes.

Convenient location

Bajeskwartier is located in district Oost of the municipality of Amsterdam and is part of the Overamstel planning area. The area is conveniently located within the ring road and is centrally located between the city center, the Zuidas and the center area of Southeast. But the green countryside of the Amstelscheg is also directly accessible.
