Sky Park, Bratislava | Special residential towers made of fiberglass-reinforced concrete

This project used glass fiber reinforced concrete based on Aalborg White cement produced by Danish company BB Fiberbeton A/S. SKY PARK is a complex project integrating 20,000 m² of public park, more than 700 apartments and 55,000 m² of office and retail space and connecting to the city's public transport and road network.

BB Fiberbeton A/S recently produced the final façade elements for the three-building high-rise complex in Slovakia. The fiber-reinforced concrete elements are used as part of the facade solution for the three organically shaped towers, the SKY PARK. "The great architectural firm is known for its exciting forms and for constantly pushing the boundaries of architecture with experimental designs. That's why it has been an interesting project for us. The organic shapes are exactly what is unique about fiber-reinforced concrete," says co-owner Nikolaj Aalund Brandt of BB Fiberbeton.

Fiberglass reinforced concrete as a perfect solution

The fiberglass-reinforced concrete elements were produced at the Danish plant outside Copenhagen. More than 220 trucks transported the 3,000 elements, made with Aalborg White cement, from Denmark to Slovakia. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2020. "We prefer Aalborg White cement for our fiberglass reinforced concrete production because of its color consistency and chemical properties," says Brandt. "High-quality white cement is an important parameter for us to achieve the specific color and surface finish. We work with many different substrates and Aalborg White cement is a good starting point. The fiberglass-reinforced concrete is extremely moldable and durable. It is also very versatile and can be properly formed into a wide range of complex shapes. By choosing fiberglass-reinforced concrete, architects have complete design freedom with regard to geometry, texture and surface. Without high costs."

Fiberglass reinforced concrete is environmentally friendly. "Its green production with low energy consumption and without toxic substances ensures low CO2 emissions per square meter. Furthermore, the light weight of the material - since it is produced in a thickness of 12 mm - and its extreme durability contribute significantly to the sustainability of the building."

Surface treatment of fiberglass reinforced concrete

BB Fiberbeton A/S's fiber reinforced concrete elements are a mixture of sand, water, cement, fibers and admixtures. The elements require no maintenance to meet the technical requirements. Fiber-reinforced concrete is virtually maintenance-free and, due to its very tight but permeable structure, stronger than conventional concrete and more dirt-repellent. Fiberglass reinforced concrete elements can be coated like other concrete elements to provide better dirt resistance and a better base for easier cleaning. Coating usually also has the effect of reducing efflorescence on the surface, which is especially visible on dark elements.
