Monster laser turns traditional steel construction upside down

A new era for Brabant family business

SIM Staalbouw is on the eve of a radical transformation. At the heart of this transformation is a unique new profile laser that will not only become the centerpiece of production, but will also drive a complete modernization of the family business based in Bergeijk. We speak to the initiator, Harry Seijkens.

A strong wind is blowing through the once traditional SIM Staalbouw. The reason? “Pure necessity,” according to Seijkens. And he should know, because seven years ago he found a similar organization in Belgium. After setting it up and completing his task, he was ready for a new challenge. “After a short search, I quickly ended up at SIM Staalbouw in Bergeijk. Here, too, I found a strong team and a willingness to change, which is the basis for radical future planning.”

Hidden gem

SIM Staalbouw turned out to be a hidden gem, but one in need of some TLC. “The website had an 80s vibe, the energy was gone, and the two owners, brothers in their 80s, didn't always see eye to eye. It simply needed a breath of fresh air.” After a serious discussion, Seijkens committed himself to the company for five years in 2024, with complete freedom to modernize it as he saw fit.

Lean philosophy

Over the past fifteen years, there had been hardly any investment: not in machinery, not in people, and not in buildings. “The first step was therefore to identify bottlenecks and waste,” explains Seijkens. “The lean philosophy was introduced, and it soon became clear that the workforce was also a challenge. The average age was high: within five years, a large part of the FTE workforce would be retiring. So something really had to be done.” Seijkens and the MT came up with the detailed idea of modernizing significantly and doubling production capacity. A crucial factor in this was updating the machinery. Four reputable suppliers were invited to bid for a new automated sawing/drilling line. After reference visits, two remained. But then something unexpected happened.

M5 profile laser

As if it were meant to be, Jürgen Kroeze from Klaassen Advanced Technology, the Bodor importer in Enschede, walked in with a proposal for a unique profile laser. Initially, there was healthy skepticism, but that soon changed. “The manufacturer already has hundreds of machines in Europe and Jürgen himself has extensive technical knowledge. He has built his own machines in the past and works closely with manufacturer Bodor to fine-tune the new machine,” says Seijkens. “The machine we ultimately ordered is unique in Europe. The M5 profile laser has an input and output of no less than 25 meters, can handle profiles up to 5,000 kilograms, and cuts steel up to 4 centimeters thick with a 20 kW laser source. This allows all possible operations to be carried out in a single process.”

Magnet for young talent

“The impact this machine will have on our company is enormous,” Seijkens expects. “The M5 profile laser offers enormous advantages: minimal waste, less wear and tear, hardly any residual material, and above all, much greater efficiency. This not only increases output, but also quality.” The process becomes more efficient and sustainable, which also increases the company's appeal. “Such a modern machine is a magnet for young talent. Operators will soon be trained both internally by us and at Klaassen Advanced Technology's own training center.”

The new M5 profile laser will be SIM Staalbouw's calling card. The monster laser, as Seijkens affectionately calls the enormous colossus, will be given a special place in the new industrial building that is currently under construction. It will truly be a showpiece that marks the start of a new era for the family business.
