Construction industry agrees on capturing asset information

NTA 8035 'Semantic data modeling in the built environment has been published'. By using NTA 8035, market parties can efficiently exchange, share and integrate data. This ensures better communication and decision-making.

Capturing meaningful digital information about assets such as buildings, roads and viaducts is called semantic modeling. This allows properties such as dimensions, materials and relationships between different assets to be recorded. For clients and contractors it is essential that this is done unambiguously.

For the creation of this Dutch Technical Agreement (NTA), clients, contractors, knowledge institutes and software builders have joined forces. By making joint agreements on semantic data modeling, a solid foundation has been laid for digital information exchange, in a way that all these parties can cope with. NTA 8035 is freely available thanks to Provincie Gelderland, BIM Loket and Rijkswaterstaat and can be downloaded free of charge via the NEN Shop and through NEN Connect.

Digital information unambiguously captured

NTA 8035 is suitable for both simple and more advanced applications. This NTA explains how digital information is recorded unambiguously: to align how information is modeled, how it is shared and integrated, and how data can be linked together (linked data). With this, NTA 8035 helps both novice and advanced data modelers on their way. The agreements made apply to both the construction sector and the process industry. For the construction sector, the revision of NEN 2660 is currently working on modeling patterns that are recognizable for the sector and connect to NTA 8035. NTA 8035 forms the preliminary work for international agreements. In the international context, NTA 8035 continues under the title "Semantic Modeling and Linking Standard (SMLS)," at the European CEN.

Parties involved

NTA 8035:2020 was developed by the standards committees "Information Integration and Interoperability" and "Rules for Information Modeling of the Built Environment. NTA 8035 contains contributions from BIM Loket, Croonwolter&dros, Provincie Gelderland, Rijkswaterstaat, Semmtech, Techniek Nederland and TNO, among others.
