Reijrink Staalconstructie bv in Hilvarenbeek marketed a highly reliable and 100% reusable steel building system with Skellet. This was done in cooperation with Skellet Genk, the Belgian inventor of the system. Skellet enables lighter, faster, more compact and cheaper construction and represents an important step forward in innovation and sustainability.
The strength of the Skellet lies in its simplicity. The heart of the steel building system is a cross-shaped connector to which steel box sections can be attached in any direction. Compare it to the "meccano" system of our youth. The elements are no longer welded together, but connected with blind rivets so that later everything can be disassembled and reused.
In terms of tools, only a saw machine and a rivet gun are required. The use of self-centering blind rivets also makes the construction 100% dimensionally stable. The entire system is extremely modular, making modification and expansion of the construction easy to perform. All Skellet profiles are available from stock and design-independent. The modularity of the system makes Skellet particularly suitable for Design & Build applications.
The Skellet system uses a 25 mm grid for the box sections and connectors with a specific profiling that guarantees exceptional strength. This makes it possible to work with lighter elements than traditional steel construction and saves up to 60% less steel for similar strengths and spans. And less weight means less cost. Time savings during construction can also reach 50%. The box sections with recessed surfaces can be coupled together without difficulty, allowing light and efficient construction with large spans and high loads and without sacrificing structural bearing capacity.
Unlike conventional steel building structures, the Skellet system is completely reusable, both technically and economically. When dismantled, all profiles and connectors remain intact and only the blind rivets are lost. Skellet meets all the conditions of economic reusability: it is quick and inexpensive to disassemble and it is design-independent. This means that the dismantled elements can be rebuilt in a completely different configuration.
The Belgian inventor of Skellet stands firmly behind the quality, longevity and reusability of the system. Thus, every system purchased comes with a conclusive Skellet SAFE warranty. This means that after the fifteenth year of life of the structure, a refund of up to 130% of the purchase price is guaranteed. To this end, all elements are branded and digitally recorded. This results in a vibrant and reliable second-hand market where partners and customers, after dismantling the construction, can trade their profiles under the best conditions. Buyers of the second-hand profiles and connectors are thus assured of the origin and overmined quality of their steel building system and this at a price significantly below the new price. An important step toward a circular and sustainable construction industry, so to speak.
With Skellet, Reijrink Staalconstructie lives up to its name as the greenest and most automated steel construction company in the Netherlands. Its efforts in innovation, sustainability and people management did not go unnoticed and previously earned it the BIM Award Benelux 2018, as well as several BREEAM 'Outstanding' design certificates.
