Platform on concrete and steel in construction
100 years
When building its office and administrative building, cement manufacturer Spenner naturally chose concrete.

100 years

Since 1926, Spenner has been synonymous with high-quality building materials and reliable partnerships. What began a century ago as a regional cement plant has grown into a successful family-owned group of companies. Today, Spenner produces cement, lime, and dry-mixed mortar at its main facility in Erwitte and employs more than 550 people across various locations. As a third-generation, medium-sized company, Spenner combines short decision-making processes, personalized support, and a high level of technical expertise with a clear focus on the future.

In the cement sector, Spenner focuses on high-quality and sustainable solutions for the concrete industry. “Our products are used for ready-mix concrete, concrete products, and precast concrete elements and meet the requirements of modern construction, civil engineering, and infrastructure projects,” says Benelux Sales Manager Rob van Duijnhoven. “We are constantly developing our product range and focusing specifically on innovations in cement technology and on reducing the carbon footprint of our products. With our many years of experience and extensive technical knowledge, we support customers in developing economical and sustainable concrete formulations for a wide range of applications.”

Duisburg as a logistics hub

The Duisburg facility plays a central role in the Dutch market. “The grinding plant built there in 2014 is located in the immediate vicinity of the steel industry and was specifically designed for the production of exceptionally low-carbon cements,” said Van Duijnhoven. “The use of blast furnace slag results in high-performance blast furnace cements with a significantly lower clinker content. Thanks to its favorable location in the Ruhr region and its proximity to the Netherlands, Duisburg is an important logistics and production hub for many of our customers in the Benelux region. From there, we reliably supply high-quality cements to numerous concrete manufacturers and construction companies for a wide range of applications.”

Powerful synergy

In addition to cement production, the group also includes Spenner Herkules and Spenner Syston. With a network of modern ready-mix concrete plants, Spenner Herkules stands for reliable concrete solutions and proximity to customers on the construction site. Spenner Syston complements the portfolio with custom-made precast concrete elements for demanding construction projects. Together, the companies combine extensive expertise across the entire value chain of cement, concrete, and precast concrete elements, thereby creating real added value for planners, construction companies, and precast manufacturers. This close integration enables short coordination channels, intensive professional contact, and a deep understanding of customer needs throughout the entire construction process.

The goal of the fourth-generation Spenner is to make cement production climate-neutral by 2045.

Sustainability as a Strategic Direction

Sustainability is a central component of the company’s strategy. “We are already focusing on CO2-optimized cements, alternative fuels, energy-efficient production facilities, and the expansion of renewable energy sources,” said Van Duijnhoven. “In addition, we are continuously working to reduce our consumption of raw materials and further increase the transparency of our products. Comprehensive measures have been developed for our sites to drive this transformation forward. Our goal is to make our cement production climate-neutral by 2045.”

100th Anniversary

The year 2026 holds special significance: Spenner will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. “A century of company history stands for continuity, innovative strength, and the ability to continually adapt to new market demands,” said Van Duijnhoven. “From our beginnings as a regional cement plant to the expansion of modern production sites and the development of a broad group of companies, Spenner’s history has always been characterized by bold investments and a clear vision of the future. At the same time, we view this anniversary as an incentive to actively shape the future of the building materials industry.”

“As a family-owned business, we place particular value on long-term relationships, technical advice, and direct communication,” concludes Van Duijnhoven. “Being close to our customers has been part of our corporate culture for a hundred years and will remain a key factor in our success in the future. With our locations in Erwitte, Duisburg, and Berlin, as well as our subsidiaries, we are ideally positioned to tackle the challenges of modern construction and to develop innovative solutions for the future together with our customers.”
