The presentation of the 22nd edition of the Concrete Prize took place on Tuesday, June 14. This prestigious Concrete Prize has been awarded every two years since 1979 to leading projects in the concrete construction industry. This edition, the prize was awarded in 6 categories: Existing Construction, Civil Construction, Sustainable Construction, Frontier Construction, Utility Construction and Residential Construction.
This year's award ceremony took place during the 64th edition of the Concrete Event at the iconic Van Nelle Factory. The expert seven-member jury reviewed 56 entries. In the end, 15 projects were nominated, divided into six categories. After valuable jury deliberations, the following winners were unanimously determined. The winners received a unique concrete trophy from jury member Machteld Kors.
In the category Existing Construction, the project Transformation building Hoog Lindoduin The Hague won. This project, submitted by ABT, used a method in which the collaboration between old and new concrete resulted in an improved building.
BAM Infra is the proud winner of the Concrete Award in the Civil Construction category with its Rotterdamsebaan project, the new road located between the Ypenburg interchange and The Hague's city center ring. The project was rightly called impressive by the jury. It is the most sustainable tunnel in Europe.
The winner of the Sustainable Construction category is the New Connection N69, border corridor, located in Province of North Brabant and submitted by Boskalis Infra. The jury is very enthusiastic about the integral approach used and a broad elaboration of sustainability opportunities applied.
Apartment building The Line is the winning project in the Groundbreaking Construction category. USHG has been used in a progressive way in the facade. With a special tectonics and refined aesthetics as an inspiring result.
Hi-Con Nederland BV won the Concrete Award in two categories. Besides the Concrete Award for Groundbreaking Construction, Hi-Con was also awarded in the category Commercial Building. In the project Concert Hall Amare the application of concrete stands out. Use was made of the freedom of form in concrete, its high aesthetic quality, low mass and long service life. This earned it the Concrete Award in the Nonresidential Building category.
Finally, Royal Haskoning DHV takes home the Concrete Award in the Residential Building category. The Westbeat residential building is not only sustainable and beautiful. The building distinguishes itself by a clever transitional construction with large concrete arches that really captures the imagination.
The jury also gave 2 honorable mentions this year, namely Eindhoven Noordwest (Heijmans) and Making housing skeletons more sustainable with low-CO2 concrete (ABT and Voorbij Prefab).
