Liemar's digital workshop has been in existence since 1989.

At Liemar, we pay a lot of attention to the digital workplace. By digital workplace, we mean a way of working in which information, communication, and process control are completely centralized and digital, as an extension of your ERP. The goal: maximum efficiency, even more overview and control, without paper flows or manual transfer.

The celebration of our 40th anniversary involved a deep dive into the archives. A stack of photos brought back some memories, and we came to the conclusion that we were already working on the digital workplace in (at least) 1989. This was before it became a household name and long before the resources for it were as readily available as they are today.

In its early years, Liemar Automatiseringen focused on the graphic industry, among others, with the development of customized solutions. Printing companies worked with order bags containing photos, negatives, and forms. We saw an opportunity to make the process smarter and faster. So we developed our own terminal: a compact PC with a monitor, keyboard, and barcode reader pen. Not a laser scanner like today, but a pen that you ran over the barcode.

That barcode was printed on the order bag. As soon as the user scanned the code, the corresponding work instructions appeared on the screen. This ensured that the printers always had the correct order information at their fingertips, digitally linked to the physical printed matter.

That system—our own, self-built terminal—was actually the very first digital workshop module. It was an innovative way of working that was ahead of its time and formed the basis for what we later developed further within the steel industry. What started with a barcode and a pen grew into a complete digital workshop concept that, more than 35 years later, still forms the heart of our software.
