How AI Can Give Engineers More Time to Design

What could engineers accomplish if they had to do less repetitive work? With Allplan Max, Allplan brings practical AI to everyday engineering workflows.

Engineers hear a lot about AI, but an AI tool is only useful if it solves real problems. Can it reduce repetitive work? Make important information easier to find? Help engineers navigate increasingly complex models and analysis results? And, crucially, can it do all of this without the engineer relinquishing their technical judgment?

That’s the idea behind Allplan Max, a new set of AI features available in Allplan 2027. It’s not AI for AI’s sake; rather, Allplan Max brings practical AI capabilities to the tools and workflows that engineers already use. The goal is simple: to remove barriers in day-to-day engineering work so that professionals can spend more time applying their expertise where it adds the most value.

Navigating Increasingly Complex Project Data

Construction projects generate enormous amounts of data. The challenge, therefore, is often to find the right information quickly enough to be able to use it effectively.

With AI BIM Analyst, engineers can search BIM data using plain language. Users can ask questions about the model, find and filter relevant information, and generate quantities and reports without having to manually search through large datasets or create complex queries.

For structural engineers, AI Structural Analyzer applies the same principle to analysis results. This feature is available in SCIA Engineer 2027 and FRILO 2027 and can identify peaks, sign changes, and critical cross-sections that require attention, enabling engineers to find important results more quickly in complex calculations.

Important: This feature does not replace the engineer’s evaluation of those results. Instead, it helps engineers focus their attention on where their expertise is needed. In this way, AI handles the complexity, while the engineer continues to make the technical decisions.

Less repetitive work

Not everything on an engineer’s to-do list requires engineering expertise. Still, repetitive tasks related to modeling, documentation, and data management can take up a lot of time that would be better spent on work with higher added value.

Several features of Allplan Max are designed to address these daily tasks. For example, AI Drafter automatically optimizes the placement of rebar labels to make drawings easier to read. This reduces the need for manual editing, while the technical content remains unchanged. With AI Formula Writer, users can create complex formulas to automatically update object attributes, filters, reports, or labels without requiring specialized knowledge of Allplan programming.

Allplan Max can also accelerate the transition from existing information to usable BIM data. AI BIM Modeler converts 2D drawings into BIM models within minutes, providing a basis for quantity takeoffs and cost estimates, or a starting point for further developing the BIM model.

Taken individually, these tasks may be relatively minor parts of the engineering process. But because they recur in numerous drawings, models, and projects, automation can free up valuable time for engineers to focus on the work that truly requires their expertise.

Making Software Knowledge More Accessible

Even experienced engineers don't use all software features every day. When an unfamiliar task arises, searching for the right command or figuring out the most efficient workflow can interrupt progress and cost valuable project time.

AI Coach provides on-demand guidance on Allplan workflows and functionality, right within the work environment. Instead of searching through documentation or asking colleagues for help, users can access relevant guidance whenever they need it and simply keep working.

This can also help less experienced team members quickly build their software knowledge, enabling companies to make expertise more accessible and encourage more consistent use of the available tools.

Turning Technical Knowledge into Digital Tools

Every engineering firm has its own way of working—from established processes and internal standards to specialized knowledge built up over years of project experience. However, transforming that expertise into customized digital tools traditionally required programming skills or in-house development capabilities.

Feature Builder is designed to lower that barrier. Users can describe the process or functionality they want to add to Allplan, after which AI generates the Python code needed to implement it. The code can then be reviewed by a technical team before it is installed and used within Allplan.

This offers opportunities to transform company-specific knowledge and ideas into reusable tools, without having to start every software development project from scratch. Instead of being limited to predefined functionality, engineering firms can increasingly adapt Allplan to their own methods and workflows. This helps preserve valuable knowledge, standardize successful processes, and automate a greater portion of the work that makes their organization unique.

Integrating AI into the engineering workflow

Engineering workflows rarely take place within a single application. Project information flows between different tools and systems, so effectively implementing AI also means finding ways to integrate it into the broader technological ecosystem.

With Workflow Builder, Allplan Max goes beyond individual tasks in Allplan. Through an MCP server, it connects Allplan to compatible large language models (LLMs) and AI agent platforms. This enables companies to create automations using AI agents that can retrieve project information, communicate with other systems, and execute workflows based on instructions in natural language.

Furthermore, this gives organizations the freedom to implement AI. Instead of being limited to a predefined set of automated workflows, companies can build connections around their own processes and technology choices. As their AI approach evolves, Allplan Max can thus become part of the broader digital workflow rather than just another standalone tool.

The engineer remains at the center

The value of Allplan Max lies not only in the fact that it brings more AI to engineering software. It’s about what engineers can do with the time and insights these capabilities provide.

But greater automation does not mean that technical decisions are left to AI. That distinction is built into every feature. By making information easier to find, reducing repetitive production work, offering on-demand guidance, and opening up new possibilities for customized automation, Allplan Max can actually help engineers spend less time operating their software and more time applying their expertise.
