Accidents that could have been prevented with proper fall protection. But what types of fall protection are there really?
There are many different types of fall protection, of which roof edge protection is probably the most well-known type. In roof edge protection, fences are attached to the roof edge. This reduces the chances of someone falling.
Is someone working alone on a roof? Then provide anti-fall belts, safety harnesses or a fall arrest block. This prevents a person from falling down.
Is the roof on which work is being done frequently accessed? If so, a cage ladder is usually used. A cage ladder starts at a height of 2.5 meters and provides a safe escape route if, for example, a fire breaks out. A cage ladder is also useful when someone needs to get onto the roof from outside the building. However, keep in mind that when the height difference of cage ladders is 10 meters or more, rest platforms must also be installed.
Are there skylights present on the roof? Then skylight security is very important. The danger of skylights is often greatly underestimated. A skylight is far from strong enough to absorb the blow when someone falls on it. So there is indeed a great danger of falling when it comes to skylights.
Do you have a job at height where the above fall protection is less suitable? Rest assured, because there are many other types of fall protection. Consider lifelines, pulleys, fall lines, helmets or descent equipment, for example.
It is mandatory in many situations to install proper fall protection. Is work being done at a height of 2.5 meters or more? Then proper fall protection must be in place. Fall protection is also mandatory on flat roofs.
