Panorama Concrete - 'Circular construction definitely takes center stage'

The 62e Concrete Day's theme is "Panorama Concrete. In doing so, the organizers are capitalizing on the government theme 'Panorama Netherlands,' in which the government encourages looking at the four major themes with an overarching view. After all, climate adaptation, agricultural reform, energy transition and urbanization are related. During Concrete Day, speakers will address the question 'How does the Netherlands want to build? And how does concrete fit into this?'

Concrete Day is organized every year by the Concrete Association. It is the day when developments in the concrete world are exchanged. "This exchange of knowledge is the main objective," says Henri van der Kamp, chairman of the Concrete Award and chairman of the board of Van Gelder Group. "In addition, it is an event where you meet industry colleagues. It is inspiring for everyone who has anything to do with concrete." During Concrete Day, the biennial Concrete Award will also be presented.

A first introduction

The main theme of Concrete Day is the future vision of the government and its consequences for building with concrete. Hence the theme "Panorama Concrete" with climate, energy, urbanization and reconstruction as themes. "Terms such as 'environmentally friendly', 'sustainable' and 'circular construction' have become indispensable in the construction world," notes Van der Kamp in this context. "These therefore certainly have a central place in the presentations given during Concrete Day. Still, it is meant to be a first introduction. After that, all avenues are still open and everyone decides for themselves what to do with them."

Speakers

Expert speakers introduce the theme and lead the ensuing discussions. Daan Zandbelt, State Advisor for the Physical Living Environment, will kick off and explain the theme. Peter Struik, chief engineer director (HID) of the Rijkswaterstaat Sustainability and Living Environment Program, discusses Rijkswaterstaat's sustainability ambitions. Then leading speakers elaborate on the four themes and, finally, several scientists discuss material developments that will enable the use of concrete also in the future.

Concrete award ceremony

A highlight of Concrete Day is the presentation of the Concrete Prize. Preparations for this have been underway for months. 65 representatives of the concrete world have submitted high-profile projects to compete for the most important certificate within their industry.

Nominees

"From the great diversity of projects - divided into six categories - we as a jury unanimously selected seventeen projects," said jury chairman Van der Kamp. "Especially in the 'Groundbreaking' category, we received projects in which techniques were applied that are new and surprising to the concrete world. This is exactly what the Concrete Prize is for. Valuable, inspiring and future-oriented projects are thus given extra attention." One of the nominees will also receive the Future Award during Concrete Day.
