Necessary fire protection

Renotec NV has a specialized civil engineering department that is responsible, among other things, for the concrete renovation of all kinds of structures. This involves looking in detail at exactly what is needed to repair, strengthen and protect the concrete. The application of fire protection is an important part of this.

It goes without saying that fires in large-scale complexes such as residential towers, tunnels and parking towers or underground parking garages carry higher safety risks. In consultation with the client and the type of fire, Renotec determines how to best protect the infrastructure should an emergency situation arise.

Efficient pre- and post-treatments

For such large projects, Renotec works closely with its suppliers and the engineering office. Based on plans and soundings, the required layer thickness is determined, according to the standards, fire type and requirements of the project. These layer thicknesses can vary from a few mm to a few cm.

Renotec applies fire-resistant coatings and lightweight cement-based spray products. The latter are often used in renovation projects. Where necessary, an additional reinforcement mesh can be applied against the concrete structure, even on top of the old coating layers, to allow optimal adhesion of the fire protection layer. Gert Ulrichts, chief project manager at Renotec, says: "Together with the client and the manufacturer of the coating, we map out the condition of the concrete and reinforcement in advance to determine the best treatment and the right fire protection products. For a fast and efficient execution of the treatment, we have seasoned teams, with our own specialized equipment. The coatings and spray products we apply not only provide the best fire resistance, some are also beautifully light and uniform in color. This eliminates the need for an additional finishing coat and greatly increases the sense of comfort and safety in parking garages, for example."

Full commitment to fire-safe parking lots

Tim Sneyers, manager at Renotec: "After years of experience in the installation of fire protection on various industrial sites and infrastructure works, we have recently been focusing on both above-ground and underground parking garages. Some recent projects we are quite proud of are the car parks Botanique and De Brouckère in the center of Brussels and the car park P5/P20 at Brussels Airport. In parking De Brouckère, we applied 16,000 m2 of fire-retardant spray mortar. In Botanique car park, also owned by Interparking, we applied 14,000 m2 over 7 floors. Brussels Airport car park P5/P20 in Zaventem is even larger in size. There we are currently handling no less than 37,000 m2. It goes without saying that with such intensively used complexes, any potential fire risk is one too many."
